Another Episode Of The Oidar Wavelength!

Direct from 1974 and the kindness of Brent Turner, we present another episode of the Top 40/Sci-Fi radio show The OIDAR Wavelength! For those just tuning in, The premise of the OIDAR Wavelength is that it is/was a musical program from the future, playing oldies from the 20th Century, and somehow, we back in the seventies were/are able to hear the program due to some space/time continuum. In between the (sometimes good, sometimes horribly horribly wretched) musical fodder, a mysterious announcer known only as "Programmer #9" relates twisted news and human interest stories from the future, the programs' present. It's kinda like Philip K. Dick doing American Top 40! Where were these recordings unearthed? It seems that Mr. Turner was at a local swap meet and came across a whole box of OIDAR Wavelength reel to reel tapes! And he sent some programs to me and now I share them with you! Remember, this was originally broadcast in 1974. In Los Angeles, the OIDAR Wavelength aired on KKDJ, a typical Top 40 station, usually starting just after the midnight hour. The file is hosted at Mediafire, so lemme know if all goes well when you try to download this 79mb file!

Movies For Nimrods From The Vaults Of Archive.org: DEMENTIA/DAUGHTER OF HORROR (1955)

Ever wonder what kind of movie would result if Ed Wood Jr. made a movie with David Lynch? This film is less than an hour, has no dialog (only narration), and it wasn't released for three years because the censors had no idea what to make of this movie. Enjoy!

My Old Apartment Building Is In "The LSD Story" Dragnet Episode!

Above you see embedded the entire pilot episode of the 1967 version of Jack Webb's Dragnet series. In the episode titled "The LSD Story", Sergeant Joe Friday (Webb) and his partner Bill Gannon (Henry Morgan) are introduced to the wild world of LSD when, out on a call, they meet Benjie "Blue Boy" Carver, a young man with his head buried in the ground looking at the center of the earth. You know the something is up with Benjie, because his face is painted blue on one side and yellow on the other. If you haven't seen the episode, you really should, if only to catch the vibe of this 1967 television series as it tries to wrap its head around the youth culture of the 1960s. Also, Dragnet was so perfectly minimal, it can't help but remind me of Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy comic strip from the fifties and sixties. Ernie Bushmiller kicks so ass.

But the reason for this posting is because my old apartment building appears in this episode of Dragnet! It's almost like I'm in the episode! In the 13th minute of "The LSD Story," Joe and Bill pull into a parking lot, and right there in the background is my old place on Dracena in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles!

I lived there for about ten years, and while I knew it was a cool old building from the 1920s (my apartment even had a genuine zinc lined icebox), I had no idea it was in the legendary Blue Boy Dragnet episode! The episode that, when it first aired in 1967, had everybody at St. Joseph's Elementary School talking about the freaky things we had seen on television the night before!

Movies For Nimrods From The Vaults Of Archive.org: MANIAC (1934 - Dwain Esper)

From the absolutely essential Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film by Michael Weldon (click and get your own copy):
"Don't pass up an opportunity to see this incredible old adults-only oddity based in part on Poe's 'The Black Cat.' ...Highlights include the eating of a cat's eye, body snatching, two woman locked in a cellar fighting with syringes, a rapist who thinks he's a gorilla, and a bit of nudity in defiance of the Hayes Code...Esper and his scriptwriter wife Hildegarde also made Marijuana: Weed With Roots In Hell, and How To Undress In Front Of Your Husband."

Kind Words From Hooverville

Ah Fong at the Hooverville blog had some very kind words about my radio show:

"A few posts below is a piece about Pete Myers AKA The Mad Daddy. Whilst i was researching it I came across a reference to Music For Nimrods, hosted by a character called Reverend Dan. Not sure why, but my interest was piqued enough to make the effort to tune in. His three hour show goes out on the Los Angeles station KXLU at 3am on Saturday (which after a few weeks of missing the first hour i realised is 11AM Glasgow time) so i had to rouse early and take my place hunched over the PC in my underwear. Not for the first time i hear you say, but let’s press on; The Reverend’s show fucking rocked. He was spinning The Blasters, The Cramps, Lou Reed and The Nerves, all the good shit you never hear on radio (bar one show of course) AND he sounds like those crazy DJs you only see in films. The kind that can grate, but on the whole are fucking awesome. Anyways thanks to VLC player not only am I now able to record the show auto-magically but i can save it and share with you bums. Here’s the show from August 28th, check back often for updates, bitchez"

And then he links to a DropBox page where you can hear last Saturday's show! Right On! Thank you Ah Fong!

Tower Records Anaheim: Reverend Dan at Work in 1980

Back in the 1980s, I worked at the Tower Records store in Anaheim, California. At this particular time, the Residents "Commercial Album" had just been released and Gregg Fylpaa, Mike Marsh and myself were really getting into the album. Evidently.

Mike had made the eyeball heads using paper-mache over punchballs (purchased at the Zody's across the street) and we each then customized our eyeball to our personal liking. We are hanging out next to store artist Karen Schmidt's Nash Rambler. It's probably Halloween.
